Depending on where you live in this country, the electric fence charger may have a different name. Some areas call chargers electric fence energizers while other areas may call them fencers. Whatever the name, the purpose is to alter the incoming electrical charge into a safer form of electricity. Learn about the different types of electric fence energizers available.
Your charger should be installed in a clean, sheltered location away from direct moisture and sunlight (with the exception of solar powered chargers). It also needs to be accessible to a separate ground rod system from a home or barn.
If you're using an AC charger, the location should be as close to the power source and the electric fence as possible. Even though the charger's enclosure is basically weatherproof, it is advisable to install it indoors or in weatherproof housing.
Be sure to install porcelain tube-type insulators (or equivalent) in the walls of buildings or housings where the fence wires feed through.
Never allow the fence wires to come into contact with objects which may conduct the electric "charge" to ground.
Frequently inspect the area where the charger is installed and maintain it as a clean and dry environment.
A: Often called "Chargers" or "Fencers", the purpose of an energizer is to convert the electrical input from a dangerous charge to an effective and safe electrical charge. The energizer, or charger, lowers Amps and increases volts.
Q: Which charger should I use?
A: There are three questions to ask before this question can be answered:
What power source do I have?
If you can use AC (regular outlet) power,
that would be preferred. Other options
include DC (Battery powered) or Solar power.
What is the perimeter distance? Each Fi-Shock® charger has clearly marked on it the range of wire that it will charge. Remember that the range is for one strand of wire, so if multiple strands are being charged then more power is needed.
What animals are being contained or repelled?
Dogs, cats, raccoons etc, are very sensitive to electrical charges and thus need a smaller charger. Predator control as well as sheep and large livestock need more power to help in the training process.
Q: Do I need to protect the charger from the weather?
A: Yes. Follow the instruction on each charger. Solar units obviously need direct sun light and need to face the sun for best results.

Fixed the ONE problem with my dog!! October 23, 2011
Reviewer: Outdoorsman131
I have a very well behaved 100lb Lab. The dog is fantastic across the board except for when I put him in the dog run while I'm at work. The dog constantly kept getting out. He would chew the bottom of the pickets off to the horizontal board they were attached to, then dig out. He tore up at least 30 boards. I stacked rocks against the fence...he dug out. I cemented the bottom of the fence...he dug out. I replaced pickets...he dug out. I said it was our other 9 year old bull terrier that was talking him into it!! I've worked at a small hardware store for 2 years and have sold this product to customers...NEVER had it crossed my mind to use it for me own. Finally I had my epiphany and kicked myself for not thinking of it sooner! I bought some plastic insulators and nailed them to the 4x4 posts going around my dog run about 7 inches off the ground. Wired the controller up and put the dogs out. Within two minutes my dog made his way for the "usual" escape spot...BAM! He yelped like a sissy and ran into his dog house.........Needless to say, I have no more holes under the fence! Great product at a great price. The shock isn't too bad, I personally tried it. I touched it with my fingers and was surprised to find it not too bad at all. However, if you get on all fours and do it...(Yes, I actually did this!)...it packs quite a punch! The dogs learned really fast, as in one time. Highly recommend it. Installed 100 ft in about 35 minutes.

I had a new chain link fence installed to contain my lab. Smart lab found out that she could still get out going under the chain link right between two support poles, at the base of the fencing. Enter the Fido Shocker. We used an outside porch light which had two bulbs. Removed one bulb and installed a piece from the hardware store that looked like the threaded end of a light bulb, but was an electrical outlet. This is where we plugged the charger in. We ran the wire around the base of the fencing, inside the yard. When the back porch light was on, the fence was hot. The dog touched it with her nose twice. It made her yelp. Then she decided it was easier to just remain in the yard. Well worth the money. Easy to set up in a short amount of time. My husband touched it to see how strong it was. He warned me not to touch it, because he felt is was strong enough it might bring tears to my eyes, so I never touched it. When we moved, we took it all down, put it in the box and I still have it, but have not needed to use it since then. It works!!
