Are you looking for a way to contain cows so they will graze in a specific area for a short period of time? Are you looking for a heavy duty fence that will contain livestock on a permanent basis?
Learn about the types of fence posts available. We also offer expert tips for placing your line electric fence posts and corner fence posts. Since they must withstand enormous tension loads, the key to constructing a solid fence starts with corner posts.
Wood Posts
A fence made only from wood posts would be a considered a completely permanent fence, but it would be the most expensive of the fence post options available.

Wood posts must be used for corners because of the additional stress and strain put on these posts. Wood posts for corners should be 24-48 inches in the ground and more than 48 inches in sandy or rocky soil.
Wood posts can be used for the line fence also since they are long lasting permanent posts. A fence made from wood posts is very strong and can last for generations, which, over time, may eventually help defray the cost of this type of fence.

T-Posts
A less expensive but also a permanent line fence would have T-posts along the lines and wood posts at the corners. Most line posts are T-Posts. T-Posts are long lasting, permanent posts made from recycled train tracks.

These posts are driven into the ground with a handheld post pounder. Each post should be driven 18-24 inches into the ground depending on the amount of strain the post will be under.
Although T-Posts do an excellent job of holding the fence, wood posts are still needed at the corners due to the higher strain of the fence wires at the corners. A T-post fence would be more expensive than a Step-In Post fence, but it would last longer.
