All About Fence Wire Electric fence wire conducts the electric charge from the fence charger around the length of the fence. Carefully consider your electric fencing needs when you choose the wire you will be using. There are several types of electric fence wire including polytape, polywire/polyrope, steel and aluminum. Each of these types have certain benefits and are ideally suited to particular uses. | | | Expert Tips One should know that when talking about the gauge of the wire, the higher the number means the smaller the wire. Most electric fence wires are 14-17 gauge and are steel or aluminum. The large wire used for High Tensile is usually 12 gauge and will state that it is for high tensile systems. Just because a wire is 12 gauge or larger does not mean it can be used in a high tensile system. Aluminum wire carries an electric charge better the steel wire alone but aluminum can stretch and thus sag over time. This does not effect the electrical charge, but it will not look as neat as most people desire their fences to look. Polytape is most often used for horse or in rotational grazing to help the livestock see the electrified wire. Polywire can be quite convenient -- if you need to move the electric fence, it is easy to roll up and relocate. Rolling up steel wire can be extremely difficult and the result may end up looking like a large slinky! Fi-Shock™ provides small and large spools of different alloys to meet all your electric fence wire needs. | |
